Teaching in English refers to the practice of using English as the language of communication during classroom instruction. It does not necessarily mean that all teaching must be conducted entirely in English. Instead, teachers use English strategically to introduce topics, give instructions, explain concepts, ask questions, and interact with students.
For future Economic Education teachers, teaching in English aims to support bilingual learning and prepare students for a global learning environment.
English has become the international language of education, science, and business. Many learning resources, including textbooks, research articles, and digital learning platforms, are written in English. Therefore, teachers who are able to teach using English have greater opportunities to:
- access international educational resources;
- improve their professional competence;
- participate in international academic activities;
- prepare students for global communication.
Teaching in English also helps students become familiar with academic vocabulary related to economics and business.
Effective teaching in English should follow several principles.
a. Use Simple and Clear Language
Teachers should use short and understandable sentences.
b. Speak Naturally
Teachers should speak clearly and at a moderate speed.
c. Encourage Student Participation
Students should be encouraged to ask questions and express opinions.
d. Use Visual Aids
Pictures, graphs, PowerPoint slides, and videos help students understand the lesson more easily.
e. Check Students' Understanding
Teachers should regularly ask simple questions to ensure that students understand the material.
Teaching generally consists of three stages.
Opening
- Greeting students
- Checking attendance
- Introducing learning objectives
- Motivating students
Whilst Teaching
- Explaining concepts
- Giving examples
- Conducting discussions
- Giving instructions
- Monitoring learning
Closing
- Summarizing the lesson
- Giving assignments
- Providing feedback
- Closing the class
A teacher is expected to be:
- a facilitator;
- a motivator;
- a communicator;
- a classroom manager;
- a role model.
When teaching in English, teachers should create a supportive environment where students feel confident to communicate.
Teaching in English is not about speaking perfect English. It is about using English effectively to support classroom communication and learning. By using simple, clear, and meaningful language, teachers can help students improve both their subject knowledge and English skills.
