UNDERSTAND THE TOPICS AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

UNDERSTAND THE TOPICS AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Number of replies: 9

Students often focus more on earning "points" on the assessment criteria (rubric) than on delving into the essence of the topic itself. In your opinion, do highly detailed grading criteria help you learn more effectively, or do they actually limit your creativity in exploring the material? Provide one example of a situation (based on experience or imagination) where understanding the grading criteria changed the way you approached an assignment.

In my opinion, detailed grading criteria can help students learn more effectively because they make the assignment expectations clearer. It also helps students stay organized and avoid missing important points in the assignment.

However, grading criteria that are too detailed can also limit creativity. For example, when I worked on a presentation assignment, awalnya saya ingin membuat presentasi yang lebih interaktif dan menambahkan contoh kehidupan nyata supaya lebih menarik. But after reading the rubric, my group focused more on theories, references, and completing every assessment point because those parts had higher scores.

In my opinion, detailed grading criteria can aid the learning process because they help students better understand the direction and purpose of the assigned tasks. With a clear rubric, students know exactly which aspects are being evaluated, allowing them to complete their assignments in a more structured manner and in line with the instructor’s expectations. However, if they focus too much on the grading points, students sometimes end up chasing grades without truly delving into the subject matter. This can limit creativity and exploration of the topic.

For example, when working on a history paper assignment, I initially wanted to focus more on analyzing historical events and connecting them to the social conditions of the time. However, after reviewing the grading rubric, I realized the instructor placed greater emphasis on the use of journal sources and the structure of the writing. In the end, I changed my approach to the assignment by focusing more on finding scholarly references and refining the writing structure to meet the criteria. From that experience, I realized that while the rubric is important as a guide, understanding the material must remain the primary focus of learning.

In my opinion, highly detailed grading criteria can help the learning process become more effective because they provide clear guidance regarding the objectives, expectations, and standards that students must achieve. Through a detailed rubric, students are able to understand which aspects should be prioritized, such as critical analysis, argument development, the use of references, and the structure of writing. As a result, the learning process becomes more organized and measurable. However, if the grading criteria are excessively rigid, they may also limit students’ creativity because students tend to focus more on fulfilling technical requirements rather than exploring ideas more deeply and innovatively.

For example, in a research paper assignment, a student initially intended to discuss a topic using a creative interdisciplinary approach. However, after carefully examining the grading rubric, the student realized that the highest scores were primarily awarded for the number of academic references, the use of formal structure, and adherence to a specific methodological framework. Consequently, the student shifted their approach by focusing more on fulfilling the rubric requirements instead of developing broader and more original arguments. This situation demonstrates that grading criteria can significantly influence the way students approach and complete academic assignments.

In my opinion, detailed grading criteria can be both helpful and limiting, depending on how students approach them.
In the context of history education, an overly rigid rubric risks reducing history to mere memorization of facts and chronology whereas the essence of learning history lies in the ability to analyze, interpret sources, and think historically (historical thinking). When students only chase points, they tend to overlook the complexity of historical narratives themselves.

Example situation: While working on an essay about the causes of World War II, I initially only listed factors according to the rubric's points economic, political, and military without examining how these three factors were interconnected. Upon realizing this, I shifted my approach by constructing a historiographical argument that critically linked these factors together, rather than simply listing them. As a result, the essay felt far more alive as a work of historical analysis.
Therefore, a rubric should be used as an initial framework, while exploration of historical sources, historiographical perspectives, and critical interpretation remain the core of the learning process.

In my opinion, highly detailed grading criteria can limit creativity because students often prioritize ticking boxes for points rather than deeply engaging with the material. For example, in a history essay assignment where the rubric heavily rewarded using five specific sources in a fixed structure, understanding these criteria made a student abandon an original plan to write a creative, argument-driven narrative. Instead, the student mechanically inserted each required source into its designated paragraph just to maximize the score, resulting in a technically correct but lifeless paper that avoided any unique interpretation of the topic.

In my opinion, highly detailed grading criteria can help students learn more effectively because they clearly explain what is expected in an assignment and help students focus on important aspects. However, grading criteria can also limit creativity if students become too focused on earning points rather than exploring ideas deeply. For example, imagine a student creating a history presentation who initially wants to use a creative storytelling approach. After reading the rubric, the student realizes that most points are given for analysis, references, and accuracy, so they adjust the presentation to better match the criteria while still adding some creative elements. This shows that understanding the grading criteria can influence how students approach an assignment.

In my opinion, detailed grading criteria help students understand assignment expectations more clearly.

However, criteria that are too detailed can sometimes limit creativity.
