In this course, the competence to be achieved is that students are able to understand basic written English by practicing how to understand various types of simple and complex sentences in various sentence forms for daily life. This course will use a book written by Prof. Dr. Patuan Raja, M.Pd. as our guidance. All the material for this semester and discussion and task will be from the book.
Hi everyone,
How are you doing? I hope you are doing well there.
Since the virus issue is now still in our country so we will support the government to stay home for this semester and for teaching learning process we will have it here. The competence to be achieved through this course is that students are able to express ideas in writing at the basic level with correct diction and grammar by studying the elements of good sentence and practice developing various types of sentence from the simple one to the complex sentence.
MEETING 1: PRE-TEST
Good morning everyone, how are you doing?
I hope you are fine and safe at home with your family. Today is the first day of this course, Basic writing. There will be some topics discussion that we will discuss in this semester but before we talk about it, I want you class to share some points about simple sentence, compound sentence and complex sentence. Please submit your answer in our WA group.
Well class, here I attach the learning contract of our course.
MEETING 2: SIMPLE SENTENCE
Good morning class, how are you doing? Hope you are doing well.
Well class, today we will start our discussion about concepts of sentence construction. After studying through this, you are expected to understand the basic concepts of sentence construction.
Alright class, we will start our discussion in this semester from the basic concept of sentence construction. It is a sentence if there is at least a subject and a predicate on it. In other word, there should be a subject and a predicate in a sentence. More explanation can be read from the chapter that I will attach. Please read it well and make sure you understand and are able to do the task as well so that you will achieve the goal of this meeting.
If you find any difficulty, you may drop your question in our WA group.
This book is about writing sentences. A sentence can be defined in various ways; different people define it in different ways. In the written form, the simplest way to define a sentence is to say that it is a stretch of words started with a capital letter and ended with a period. This is not a very good definition. Basically, however, a sentence is a predication, which is the relation formed by a subject and a predicate. In other words, in a sentence there must be a subject and a predicate. Thus, there is no sentence without a subject or a predicate.
Please do the activity on the book from activity 1.1 until 1.5. Then submit your answer in form of MSword file here today before 01.00 pm.
Good luck!
MEETING 3: S+Vi(+A)
Morning class, how are you today? Hope you and your family are doing well.
Well class, I have checked some of your task, thanks for submitting on time but trhere is one of you who did not submit the task I guess.
Alright class, last meeting we have discussed about the concept of making sentence in general. Now, we are going to focus on a sentence which is constructed by Subject and Verb. After studying through this, you are expected to understand and are able to write a sentence by using SV.
Well class, there are kinds of sentence that you will find in daily life. We will discuss it one by one and step by step. Now, let's start from a sentence by using SV (Subject and Verb/Predicate). Here, I will share you the next chapter of Prof Patuan's book so that you will read and learn from it. You may later find any difficulty, do not hesitate to give the question in our WA group.
After understanding this chapter, you will do the activity in this chapter so make sure that you understand and I believe if you can do the activities well means that you achieve the goal of this meeting.
After studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write simple sentences with Pattern S+Vi(+A)
Please do activity 2.1 until 2.7 in Ms Word and share it here before 01.00 p.m.
Good luck.
MEETING 4: S+V+C
Morning everyone, how are you today? Hope you are doing well and your family too.
Well class, thanks for submitting your task on time. Last meeting we have discussed about simple sentence constructed by subject, verb and adverb. Now, we will continue to the next topic which is simple sentence by using Subject Verb Complement. After studying this, you are expected to understand and are able to write simple sentence by using this pattern.
Before we discuss the details, I am going to ask you first a question.
What did you learn last meeting? Can you share briefly? (give your response in the comment)
Well class, in simple sentence, there are kinds of pattern that we can use in our daily life conversation. Today's topic, we will discuss about simple sentence by using pattern SVC. Last meeting you have known a sentence by using SV and now you will learn more a sentence with complement. Here, I will share you the next chapter of Prof Patuan's book so that you will read and learn from it. You may later find any difficulty, do not hesitate to give the question in our WA group.
After understanding this chapter, you will do the activity in this chapter so make sure that you understand and I believe if you can do the activities well and achieve the objective of this meeting.
Some verbs are sometimes followed by a subject complement to make a predicate. In this case, the complement is a necessary component of the predicate. In other words, it can not be deleted. If it is omitted from the predicate, the meaning of the whole sentence will alter drastically. In some cases, without a complement, a verb will totally fail to form a predicate. Study this chapter to get your understanding more.
Please do activity 3.1 until 3.4 in Ms Word and share it here before 01.00 p.m.
Good luck.
MEETING 5: S+Vt+O (Part 1)
Morning everyone, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well.
Last meeting we have discussed about simple sentence constructed by subject, verb and complement. Now, we will continue to the next topic which is simple sentence by using Subject, Verb, and Object. After studying this, you are expected to understand and are able to write simple sentence by using this pattern.
Anyway, last task is pretty good. You guys did it well. Keep it up.
Alright class, today's topic, we will discuss about simple sentence by using pattern SVO. I think this pattern is the most familiar one but more than what you have understood, maybe there are some points that you just knew after finishing this topic. Here, I will share you the next chapter of Prof Patuan's book so that you will read and learn from it. You may later find any difficulty, do not hesitate to give the question in our WA group.
Some verbs require an object to make a predicate. Without an object, such verbs will not make a complete predicate. Study the details in this chapter.
Please do activity 4.1 till 4.8 before 08.00 p.m.
Good luck!
MEETING 6: S+Vt+O (Part 2)
Morning class, how are you today? Hope you and your family are doing well.
Well class, I have checked some of your task, thanks for submitting on time.
Alright class, last meeting we have discussed about simple sentence with pattern SVO. Before we continue to the next sub topics, I am going to make sure that you guys understand about our last topic. Please tell me what have you got in the previous meeting? Share your answer in comment column.
Well class, in previous meeting, we learned that transitive verbs can be followed by a noun, a to-infinitive and a gerund. Today, we will continue to the next discussion, still about last chapter but new sub topics, they are a that-clause, and a wh-clause as object. Study today's topic critically. (look at the chapter in the previous meeting)
MEETING 7: S+V+Oi+Od
Good Afternoon class, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well and also your family.
Well class, last meeting you have learnt kinds of clauses. I am going to make sure you have understood about it. Please make a sentence by using that or WH clause in the comment column before we discuss the next chapter.
In previous Chapter, we learned that transitive verbs can be followed by a noun, a to-infinitive, a gerund, a that-clause, and a wh-clause as object. These verbs, which take one object to make a predicate, are called monotransitive verbs. In addition, some transitive verbs might simultaneously take two objects to make a predicate: a direct object (Od) and an indirect object (Oi). Verbs of this type are called ditransitive verbs. Study this chapter critically.
Please do activity 5.1 till 5.9 and submit it a day before our next meeting.
Good luck!
MEETING 8: MID TEST
Please do it by your own and submit it before 11.00 a.m.
Good luck!
MEETING 9: SVOC (Part 1)
Good Afternoon class, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well and your family too.
Well class, last meeting you have done with your mid test. You did it well, good job! I will share your score at the end of the semester with your final exam result later. Keep doing your best to get your best result.
In Chapter 3 we learned that a verb might take a subject complement (Cs) to make a predicate. In this case, the complement refers back to the subject. Well, in this chapter, we are going to learn that a transitive verb might be followed by an object and an object complement (Co) to make a predicate. In this case, the complement refers back to the object. Please scrutinize this chapter and hopefully after studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write simple sentences with Pattern S+Vt+O+Co
MEETING 10: SVOC (Part 2)
Good morning class, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well and also your family.
Well class, last meeting you have learnt part 1 of SVOC sentence. I am going to make sure you have understood about it. Please make a sentence by using that form in the comment column before we discuss the next chapter.
Well class, last meeting we have discussed a half chapter of SVOC sentence. There are adjective, noun, and to-infinitive as the object complement. Today, we will continue to the sub chapter which are about bare infinitive, present participle and past participle as object complement. Please read the next attachment to understand more about this.
Please do task 6.10 till 6.18 correctly and submit it here before 5th of November.
Good luck!
MEETING 11: Compound Sentence
Good morning class, how's your life doing? I hope you are doing well and also your family.
Well class, last meeting you have finished learning kinds of simple sentence. I am going to make sure you have understood it all. Please tell me how many kinds of simple sentence form that we have discussed so far? Give your response in the comment column please.
Alright class, we will go to the next topic of our discussion. It is about compound sentence. A simple sentence consists of one clause, an independent clause, while a complex sentence consists of at least two clauses, one independent (a main clause) and at least one dependent clause (subordinate clause). A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses. These clauses could actually be written out as two separate simple sentences. Study this chapter well.
After studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write compound sentences using coordinate conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs.
Please do Task 7.1 till 7.10 correctly and submit it before next two days.
Good luck!
MEETING 12: Compound Sentence (Part 2)
Good morning class, how's your life doing? I hope you are doing well and also your family.
Well class, last meeting you have finished learning the first part of compound sentence. So, what is compound sentence so far from your understanding? please give your answer in the comment. Before you write your comment, do not forget to fill the attendance first.
After studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write compound sentences using coordinate conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs.
A compound sentence is a sentence which is made up of two independent clauses, joined by a coordinate conjunction. However, in addition to a coordinate conjunction to construct a compound sentence, we can also use a conjunctive adverb. As the name suggests, a conjunctive adverb is an adverb which also acts like a conjunction since it can connect two independent clauses to become a compound sentence. Study the following subchapter carefully.
Please do activity 7.12 until 7.18 and submit it in next two days.
Good luck!
Here I sum up your involvement in doing task so far. There are some names who missed submitting some tasks. Just a reminder for you so that you will not make any complain about your score later.

MEETING 13: Complex Sentence (Adj Clauses)
Good morning class, how's your life doing? I hope you are doing well and also your family.
Well class, last meeting we have finished discussing about compound sentence. Before you write your comment, do not forget to fill the attendance first.
Thanks for your involvement in the previous topic discussion. As your reminder, I am going to mention the one who did not submit the task in previous meeting:
Anisa Nur (4 times already)
In the previous chapter, we learned to construct a compound sentence—a sentence which is made up of two independent clauses joined by either a coordinate conjunction or a conjunctive adverb. In this chapter, as well as in the next two chapters, we are going to learn to construct a complex sentence. A complex sentence is a sentence which consists of at least two clauses—one independent (or main) clause and one dependent (or subordinate) clause. The main clause can somehow stand alone as a separate sentence, while the subordinate clause can not because it is only a part of the main clause. There are three types of dependent clauses based on their functions in the main clause: adjective clause, noun clause, and adverb clause.
After studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write complex sentences with adjective clauses.
Please do activity 8.1 till 8.11 and submit it a day before next meeting.
Good luck!
MEETING 14: Complex Sentence (Noun Clauses)
Good morning class, how's your life doing? I hope you are doing well.
Well class, last meeting we have finished discussing about complex sentence but actually there are some parts of complex sentence discussion. Previous meeting, we have adjective clauses for our discussion and today we will continue to the other part of complex sentence which is noun clauses. Before that do not forget to fill the attendance first.
Thanks for your involvement in the previous topic discussion. As your reminder, I am going to mention the names who did not submit the task in previous meeting:
Anisa Nur (5 times already)
Lathifa Puan
Well class, since writing is a productive skill, you need to always practice to be able to write and master this skill. This meeting, you will get more understanding about complex sentence by using noun clauses. Enjoy every topic discussion in this class and do your task well so that you will have a good writing then.
Alright, let's begin the discussion.
A dependent clause may function as an adjective, a noun, or an adverb in the main clause. In the previous chapter, we learned how to construct a complex sentence containing an adjective clause. In the present chapter, we are going to learn how to construct a complex sentence containing a noun clause. A noun clause is a dependent clause which functions as a noun in the main clause. Let us study the following chapter critically.
After studying through this chapter, you are expected to be able to write complex sentences with noun clauses.
(Raja, 2018)
Please do activity 9.1 till 9.10 correctly and submit it by the weekend.
Good luck!
