Basic Writing A -> PRESENTATION

by Khairun Nisa -

Well class, since writing is a productive skill, you need to always practice to be able to write and master this skill. This meeting, you will get more understanding about complex sentence by using noun clauses. Enjoy every topic discussion in this class and do your task well so that you will have a good writing then.

Alright, let's begin the discussion.

A dependent clause may function as an adjective, a noun, or an adverb in the main clause. In the previous chapter, we learned how to construct a complex sentence containing an adjective clause. In the present chapter, we are going to learn how to construct a complex sentence containing a noun clause. A noun clause is a dependent clause which functions as a noun in the main clause. Let us study the following chapter critically.

In the previous chapter, we learned to construct a compound sentence—a sentence which is made up of two independent clauses joined by either a coordinate conjunction or a conjunctive adverb. In this chapter, as well as in the next two chapters, we are going to learn to construct a complex sentence. A complex sentence is a sentence which consists of at least two clauses—one independent (or main) clause and one dependent (or subordinate) clause. The main clause can somehow stand alone as a separate sentence, while the subordinate clause can not because it is only a part of the main clause. There are three types of dependent clauses based on their functions in the main clause: adjective clause, noun clause, and adverb clause.
